Should I Go to the Dentist If My Teeth Are Sensitive?

If you’ve experienced a sharp pain in your mouth that lasts for more than a few seconds, you’re likely dealing with sensitive teeth. Read on as a Miami Beach, FL dentist talks about the signs and symptoms of sensitivity, why it’s happening to you, and whether or not you should go to the dentist if it happens again.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth can be caused by many different things, which means there are a few different reasons why you might want to visit your dentist. Here are just a few factors that can cause sensitive teeth:

  • Soreness or pain in your mouth is often indicative of tooth decay, gum disease, tooth grinding, cavities, or dry mouth—all of which require the attention of a dental professional.
  • Tooth sensitivity can also be an indication that there’s an issue with one of your teeth, such as cracks or chips along the surface of the enamel (which will lead to decay) or a fracture inside the tooth that causes pain when hot food touches it.
  • Tooth decay that has entered the pulp chamber of your tooth and is causing damage to your root canal system
  • Overbrushing and overuse of whitening products and mouthwashes containing alcohol
  • Acid reflux from certain foods or drinks, including caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes, wine, or coffee
  • You have worn off the enamel (the protective coating on your teeth) from grinding or clenching too hard over time

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent the condition from getting worse.

Treatments for Sensitive Teeth

Dentists are the best qualified to assess if your teeth are sensitive and what the cause might be. Your dentist will ask questions about your dental history, symptoms, and lifestyle to determine what’s causing the sensitivity.

There are many different types of treatments that your dentist can recommend to treat your sensitive teeth. The most common treatments include:

  • Dental sealants: Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating that’s applied to the surface of your teeth. The sealant covers and protects the sensitive areas of your tooth where the enamel is worn away or pitted.
  • Fluoride treatments: Fluoride is a chemical that helps prevent tooth decay and remineralizes weak spots in your enamel.
  • Dental bonding: Dental bonding is a way of strengthening your teeth by applying a composite resin material to the surface of your teeth.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin
  • Acid-buffering agents, which neutralize acid and make your mouth feel less acidic
  • Oral hygiene instructions and a home care regimen
