How Can I Keep My Teeth Healthy During the Holidays?

The holidays are a time of joy and laughter, but they can also be stressful. Between work, family obligations, and gift-giving, it’s easy to forget your oral health during this busy season. We’re here to tell you that your smile is just as important as those gifts—and there’s no reason you can’t take care of both at once!

Know Your Family’s Oral History

If you have a family history of gum disease or tooth decay, you may be at higher risk for developing the same ailment. In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) estimates that more than half of all cases of gum disease are hereditary. 

To find out if your family’s oral health is at risk, ask your doctor and family members about their oral health histories. You’ll want to know:

  • Have they had any tooth decay?
  • Have they ever had surgery on their gums?
  • Has anyone experienced chronic inflammation in their mouth or tongue?

Be Mindful of What You Eat

  • Avoid too much sugar – holiday foods tend to be loaded with sugar, which can lead to tooth decay if you’re not careful.
  • Avoid too much salt – salt is another culprit when it comes to the development of cavities and even gum disease.
  • Stay away from acidic foods and beverages – acidic foods and beverages weaken your teeth’s enamel layer, making them more susceptible to decay from sugary or acidic foods during the holidays. 
  • Steer clear of starchy foods that are high in carbohydrates (like potatoes) – these types of carbohydrates break down into sugars after digestion so try limiting your intake for the healthiest teeth possible!

Drink Plenty of Water

Drink lots and lots of water. And then keep drinking it!

Water is one of the most important things you can do to keep your teeth healthy. It helps remove plaque  and keeps your teeth strong and healthy.

Brush and Floss

Brushing and flossing are the first steps to helping your teeth stay healthy. You should brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day. 

Flossing is another essential part of keeping your mouth clean. Plaque can act as breeding grounds for bacteria, so, it’s important to remove this plaque by flossing daily.
