Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Invisalign?

If you’re wearing braces, you may be curious about Invisalign, a new type of dental technology that straightens teeth without the use of traditional metal wires and brackets. Read on as a Midtown Miami, FL dentist discusses how Invisalign works and whether it’s right for you.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable plastic trays that you wear over your teeth. They’re designed to straighten your teeth by gradually moving them into place as you wear each new pair of trays. A great option for people who want discreet teeth straightening, Invisalign is customized to fit the unique shape of your mouth and can be removed at any time during treatment to eat and drink.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

If you’re considering Invisalign, here are a few requirements to keep in mind:

  • You cannot wear Invisalign if you have gum disease, dental decay, loose or missing teeth, or any other condition that causes pain or discomfort when wearing braces.
  • You need to be able to follow a treatment plan. Invisalign requires wearing your trays for 20 to 22 hours each day, which can be difficult if you have a busy schedule or travel frequently. -You cannot wear Invisalign if you have a history of jaw disorders, including TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome) or bruxism (teeth grinding).
  • You must be able to visit your dentist at least once every six weeks for adjustments and replacements.
  • You should not wear Invisalign if you have a condition that makes you prone to gum disease or tooth decay.
  • You should not wear Invisalign if you have an allergy or sensitivity to nickel or cobalt (the metals used in the trays).
  • You cannot wear braces with an active orthodontic appliance, such as a retainer or expander. This includes oral devices that are placed in your mouth for the purpose of moving teeth.

Considerations

And now that you’re familiar with the basics of Invisalign, you can decide if it’s right for your teeth straightening needs. If you’re looking for a discreet way to correct crooked teeth or gaps, then Invisalign may be an excellent option for you.

But keep in mind that not everyone is a good candidate for Invisalign treatment—you may want to consult with an accredited dentist before pursuing this treatment plan with your orthodontist or dentist.
